Shopify Payment Rules: How to Show Bank Transfer Only for Large Orders

Bank transfer has overhead that card payment does not. Someone needs to match the incoming payment to the order, follow up on late transfers, and reconcile the account. For a £15 order, this overhead exceeds the cost saved on card fees. Bank transfer should be reserved for orders where the processing effort is justified.

Setting a Minimum Order Value for Bank Transfer

Paymod lets you set cart-value conditions on any payment method. Install from the Shopify App Store, then create a rule:

  • Condition: Cart total is less than £100
  • Action: Hide Bank Transfer
  • Effect: Bank transfer disappears from checkout for small orders. It reappears automatically once the cart exceeds £100.

Combining with Wholesale Customer Rules

Wholesale customers often require bank transfer regardless of cart size. Exempt them from the threshold rule:

  • Rule 1: Hide Bank Transfer when cart total < £100 AND customer tag is NOT 'wholesale'
  • Result: Retail customers only see bank transfer on large orders. Wholesale customers always see it.

Adding Net Payment Terms

For established wholesale accounts, net payment terms (net 30, net 60) are often preferable to immediate bank transfer. You can create a manual payment method in Shopify called ‘Net 30 — Invoice’ and show it only to accounts tagged ‘net30’. Paymod hides it for everyone else.

Measuring the Impact

Track the percentage of large orders that use bank transfer before and after applying the threshold rule. Most merchants find that retail customers above the threshold still prefer card or wallet payment — but the option is there for those who need it. The main win is eliminating the reconciliation burden on small orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I set the threshold at my exact break-even point?

Start with a threshold slightly above break-even — £50, £100, or £200 depending on your cost model. You can always adjust the rule in Paymod without changing your payment provider settings.

Can I hide all manual payment methods below a threshold?

Yes. Create separate rules for each manual method (bank transfer, COD, pay on collection) using the same cart-value condition.
