Not all payment methods work everywhere. Some providers are region-specific. COD makes sense in markets where it is culturally expected (India, Gulf states, parts of Eastern Europe) but adds no value — and carries fraud risk — elsewhere. Shopify shows all enabled payment methods to all customers regardless of location.
Why Country-Based Payment Rules Matter
- A payment method unavailable in a region creates checkout confusion and abandoned carts
- COD fraud rates vary dramatically by country — rules help you manage exposure
- Local payment methods (UPI, iDEAL, Boleto) should appear only for their relevant markets
- Bank transfer and net-terms payment should not appear for international retail orders
Setting Country-Based Payment Rules with Paymod
Install Paymod
Paymod supports shipping country as a condition for payment method rules. Install from the Shopify App Store.
Example: Hide COD for all non-domestic orders
Rule: Hide Cash on Delivery when shipping country is NOT ‘GB’ (or your domestic market). COD remains available for domestic orders and disappears for all international checkouts.
Example: Show a local payment method only for its market
If you have a payment method that only works in Germany, create a rule: Show [Payment Method] only when shipping country = ‘DE’. All other countries see your standard global options.
Example: Block bank transfer for international retail
Rule: Hide Bank Transfer when shipping country is NOT ‘GB’ AND customer tag is NOT ‘wholesale’. Domestic retail and global wholesale can still use bank transfer; international retail cannot.
Layering Country Rules with Other Conditions
Country conditions combine cleanly with cart value, customer tag, and product conditions:
- Hide COD for international AND hide COD when cart total exceeds £200
- Show UPI only when shipping country = IN AND cart total is greater than ₹500
- Hide Klarna for non-EU countries (it is not available in most non-EU markets anyway)
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I target specific regions within a country?
Paymod supports country-level conditions. State or postcode-level conditions depend on the available Shopify checkout data for the customer’s session.
What if a customer uses a billing address in one country but ships to another?
Conditions evaluate against the shipping address provided at checkout, which is the most reliable signal for delivery-related payment rules.
Install Paymod to set payment method rules by country on Shopify — no code, no Shopify Plus required.
