How to Require a Minimum Cart Value for Specific Payment Methods on Shopify

Bank transfer for a £12 order costs more to process than the profit. BNPL for a £5 purchase creates unnecessary credit risk. Some payment methods only make financial sense above a certain order value — and Shopify does not let you enforce this natively.

Payment Methods That Benefit from Minimum Value Rules

  • Bank transfer / BACS — processing cost makes it viable only for larger orders
  • Invoice / Net 30 — credit terms are not worth extending below a minimum
  • BNPL (Klarna, Afterpay, Clearpay) — provider terms often suggest minimums
  • Cash on Delivery — fulfilment cost is only justified above a floor

Setting Cart Value Thresholds with Paymod

Paymod supports cart total conditions for payment visibility rules. This is one of the most common use cases alongside COD fraud prevention rules.

Example: Hide bank transfer below £100

Rule: Hide Bank Transfer when cart total is less than £100. Small orders must pay by card or wallet. Large orders get bank transfer as an additional option.

Example: Hide BNPL below £50

Rule: Hide Klarna / Afterpay when cart total is less than £50. Matches common provider recommendations and reduces small-order credit exposure. Full BNPL setup: hide BNPL for small orders on Shopify.

Example: Show Invoice only above £500

Rule: Hide Invoice / Net 30 when cart total is less than £500. Invoice terms only appear for meaningful B2B order sizes.

Combining with Other Conditions

Pair cart value conditions with customer tag conditions. For example: show Invoice only when cart total is above £500 AND customer is tagged ‘wholesale’. This avoids offering credit terms to retail customers regardless of order size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set a maximum cart value (not just minimum) for a payment method?

Yes. Paymod supports both ‘less than’ and ‘greater than’ conditions. Hide COD when cart total is more than £300 and less than £10 — showing it only for mid-range orders.

Does it evaluate the total before or after discounts?

Paymod evaluates the cart total as it appears at checkout time — after applied discount codes and automatic discounts.
