How to Hide Afterpay and BNPL for Small Orders on Shopify

Buy Now Pay Later works well for considered purchases. A customer splitting a £300 item into 4 payments makes sense — they are more likely to complete the instalments. A customer splitting a £15 order into 4 payments of £3.75 creates admin overhead for the provider and credit risk for your merchant account. Most BNPL providers themselves recommend minimum order values.

Why Hiding BNPL Below a Threshold Makes Sense

  • Provider fees are a percentage — the same rate on a small order leaves little margin
  • Instalments on tiny orders create disproportionate admin if a payment fails
  • BNPL visibility on low AOV carts can reduce your average order value further
  • Some providers restrict BNPL below a minimum anyway — surfacing it creates checkout confusion

Hiding BNPL Conditionally with Paymod

Paymod lets you hide Afterpay, Klarna, Clearpay, Laybuy, or any BNPL method when cart total is below your threshold. See also the broader BNPL hiding guide for full provider coverage.

Create the rule

Open Paymod. Create a rule: Hide Afterpay (or your preferred BNPL provider) when cart total is less than £50 (or your threshold). Enable and test.

Test from checkout

Add products totalling less than your threshold and proceed to checkout. The BNPL option should not appear. Add enough to cross the threshold — the option should return.

Combining BNPL Hiding with Other Rules

Combine BNPL threshold rules with cart value rules for other payment methods for a complete conditional payment stack. Hide COD above £300, hide BNPL below £50, show invoice only above £500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide BNPL for specific products, not just cart totals?

Yes. Paymod supports product-tag conditions. Hide BNPL when the cart contains a product tagged ‘no-bnpl’. Combine with cart value for a multi-condition rule. See hiding payment methods for specific products.

Does hiding BNPL affect the product page messaging?

Paymod controls payment methods at Shopify checkout. BNPL messaging on product pages (e.g. Klarna’s widget) is a theme-level or provider-level element and is separate.

Install Paymod to hide Afterpay, Klarna, and BNPL for small Shopify orders — enforced at checkout, no code needed.
