How to Manage High-Demand Products on Shopify with Quantity Limits

When a product is in genuine short supply, how you allocate it matters. Without controls, a handful of buyers — or bots — can clear your stock within seconds, leaving loyal customers with nothing and your social channels full of complaints.

Scenarios Where Quantity Limits Protect Your Brand

  • Limited edition drops — one per customer, enforced
  • Collaborations — allocate fairly across your customer base
  • Stock shortages — cap purchases during supply constraints
  • Waitlist fulfilments — release stock to the list in controlled quantities

Per-Cart vs Per-Customer Limits for High-Demand Products

A per-cart maximum (see: maximum order quantity on Shopify) stops a single cart from buying 20 units. A per-customer limit (see: per-customer purchase limits) stops the same person placing 10 separate carts of 2.

For genuinely scarce products, use both simultaneously.

Setting Up with Fold

Fold supports both rule types. Install from the Shopify App Store.

Rule 1: Maximum per cart

Target the limited product. Maximum = 1 (or 2 for a slightly less scarce drop). Customers with more in their cart cannot proceed.

Rule 2: Per-customer lifetime limit

Same product. Per-customer maximum = 1. A customer who has already bought this product cannot buy again, regardless of how many separate orders they attempt.

VIP Early Access with Different Limits

Tag VIP or loyalty customers. Create a second rule: VIP customers can buy 2 units; everyone else is capped at 1. Use customer tag conditions in Fold to apply different limits by audience.

Communicating the Limit to Customers

Be transparent before checkout. Add the limit to your product page description and your sale announcement: “Limited to 1 per customer. Enforced at checkout.” This reduces cart abandonment from customers who were planning to buy more — they understand the rule upfront.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I time-limit the rule to a drop window?

Enable the rule before the drop and disable it after. Rules toggle on and off instantly from Fold — no product or theme changes required.

What stops someone using multiple accounts?

Per-customer limits track by email and account. Multiple accounts using different emails are harder to catch at checkout. For very high-value limited items, pair with a manual verification step (ID check, loyalty point gate) before the sale.

Install Fold to control high-demand product allocation on Shopify — per-cart and per-customer limits, active in minutes.
