Shopify Quantity Rules for Pre-Orders: How to Manage Allocation

Pre-orders require careful inventory allocation. You have a fixed run of 200 units launching next month. You want to take pre-orders now — but you need to ensure no single customer reserves more than 2 units, and your wholesale accounts get their allocation before retail opens.

Shopify’s standard product setup does not support this level of pre-order quantity control. Here is how to add it.

Pre-Order Quantity Challenges on Shopify

  • Customers can pre-order unlimited quantities unless you manually set stock to a number
  • No per-customer cap prevents one person reserving 50 of your 200 units
  • Wholesale allocation cannot be separated from retail allocation natively
  • Early-bird limits (e.g. first 100 pre-orders capped at 1 each) are impossible without an app

How to Set Pre-Order Quantity Limits with Fold

Fold applies quantity rules at Shopify checkout, making them effective for pre-orders as well as in-stock products.

Maximum quantity per cart

Set a maximum of 2 units per cart for your pre-order product. No single order can reserve more than 2 units, protecting your allocation across all pre-order customers.

Per-customer lifetime limit

Set a per-customer maximum of 2 units total. Even if someone places multiple pre-order transactions, they cannot exceed their allocation.

Wholesale allocation via customer tag

Tag wholesale accounts. Create a separate rule: wholesale customers can pre-order up to 12 units; retail customers are capped at 2. Both rules apply simultaneously to the correct customer groups.

Combining with Shopify’s Stock Level

Set your pre-order product’s inventory to the exact number of units you are allocating. Shopify will prevent sales beyond that stock level. The Fold rules then control per-customer distribution within that stock level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the rules apply to pre-orders specifically or all products?

Fold rules apply to any product you target — including pre-order variants. The rules do not know whether a product is a pre-order or in-stock; they enforce quantity limits regardless.

Can I lift the limits once the product ships?

Yes. Deactivate or delete the rule in Fold at any time. Rules can be turned on and off without affecting your product setup.

What if I want the first 50 pre-orders capped at 1 each?

Set a per-customer limit of 1 and a store-wide stock of 50 for the early-bird variant. Once stock hits zero, that variant is sold out. Combine with a second variant for the remaining allocation if needed.

Install Fold to manage pre-order allocation on Shopify — per-customer limits, wholesale tiers, maximum quantities, all enforced at checkout.
