How to Set a Minimum Order Quantity on Shopify (Without Code)

If you run a wholesale store, a subscription box, or any shop where selling single units below a threshold does not make sense, Shopify’s default behaviour is a problem. By default, any customer can add one of anything to their cart and check out. There is no built-in minimum order quantity control.

This guide covers how to set a minimum order quantity on Shopify — by product, by collection, or by customer type — without touching your theme code or hiring a developer.

What Is a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?

A minimum order quantity is the lowest number of units a customer must purchase in a single transaction. It is common in:

  • Wholesale and B2B stores — where selling fewer than a case quantity is unprofitable
  • Subscription and bundle stores — where a minimum unit count is part of the product model
  • Print-on-demand or custom manufacturing — where production only starts at a minimum run
  • Perishables and food — where a minimum is required to justify refrigerated shipping

Why Shopify Does Not Have a Built-In MOQ Setting

Shopify is built for general retail. Its product and variant settings include stock levels, prices, and SKUs — but no minimum quantity field. You can use cart notes and hope customers comply, or add a line to your product description, but neither actually enforces anything at checkout.

The only reliable way to enforce a minimum order quantity is at the checkout level, which requires either custom code or a Shopify Functions-powered app.

How to Set Minimum Order Quantity on Shopify: Step by Step

Step 1 — Install Fold

Fold is a Shopify app built specifically for order quantity rules. It uses Shopify Functions to enforce limits at checkout — not just in the cart — so customers cannot bypass the rules by editing the cart URL or checking out via third-party channels.

Step 2 — Create a minimum quantity rule

From your Shopify admin, open Fold and click Create Rule. Select Minimum Quantity as the rule type. You can target:

  • A specific product
  • An entire collection
  • Products with a specific tag
  • Your entire store

Step 3 — Set optional conditions

You can scope the rule further. For example: apply the minimum only to customers tagged as ‘wholesale’, or only for orders below a certain total value. This lets you run retail and wholesale from the same store with different rules.

Step 4 — Set the minimum quantity and error message

Enter the minimum number of units. Then write the message a customer sees if they try to check out with fewer — for example: “This product requires a minimum order of 6 units. Please update your quantity.”

Step 5 — Activate and test

Enable the rule and test it from a customer-facing window. Add fewer than the minimum to your cart and attempt to check out. The rule should block the purchase and show your custom message.

Use Cases

Wholesale with a 12-unit case minimum

Tag wholesale accounts as ‘wholesale’. Create a rule: minimum quantity = 12, applies when customer tag = wholesale. Retail customers see no restriction.

Print-on-demand with a 25-unit run minimum

Apply a store-wide minimum of 25 units. Any cart with fewer than 25 total items is blocked at checkout with a clear explanation.

Perishables with a minimum per shipping tier

Set a minimum of 6 units for chilled products. Below that, the order is not worth the cold-chain cost. The rule enforces it automatically so your team never has to manually reject an order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work on all Shopify plans?

Yes. Fold uses Shopify Functions which are available on Basic, Shopify, and Advanced plans. You do not need Shopify Plus.

Can I set different minimums for different products?

Yes. You can create as many rules as you need, each targeting a different product, collection, or tag with its own minimum quantity.

What happens if a customer tries to bypass the minimum?

Rules run at the Shopify checkout level, not just in the cart. Even if a customer manipulates the cart URL or uses a third-party checkout, the rule validates at the point of payment.

Setting minimum order quantities on Shopify does not require a developer. Install Fold from the Shopify App Store and your first rule can be live in under five minutes.
