How to Limit Purchases Per Customer on Shopify

Limited edition drops. Promotional items. Fair-distribution products during high demand. In all these cases, you need to cap how much a single customer can buy — not just how much any order contains.

Shopify does not include per-customer purchase limits out of the box. This guide explains how to add them without code.

Why Per-Customer Limits Are Different from Order Quantity Limits

An order quantity limit blocks a single cart from containing more than X units. A per-customer limit goes further — it tracks how much a given customer has purchased historically and blocks additional purchases once they hit the cap.

Use cases include:

  • Limited edition drops — one per customer, enforced at checkout
  • Promotional pricing — a discounted item available only once per account
  • Fair-access products — where resellers would otherwise buy out stock
  • Sample or tester products — one free sample per household

How to Set Per-Customer Purchase Limits on Shopify

Install Fold

Fold handles per-customer quantity limits through Shopify Functions. Install it from the Shopify App Store — no theme edits required.

Create a maximum quantity rule

Open Fold, click Create Rule, and select Maximum Quantity. Set the cap — for example, 1 unit per customer. Target the specific product, variant, or collection you want to limit.

Apply customer-tag scoping if needed

If you want the limit to apply only to retail customers but not to approved wholesale accounts, add a customer tag condition. Customers tagged ‘vip’ or ‘approved-reseller’ can be exempt.

Test with a customer account

Log in as a test customer, add more than the limit to the cart, and attempt to check out. The rule should block the purchase and show your configured message.

Combining Per-Customer Limits with Discount Codes

A common pattern: you have a discount code that gives 50% off a product, but you only want each customer to use it once. Set the discount code to single-use in Shopify, and pair it with a maximum quantity rule of 1 unit on that product. Both gates need to pass for the purchase to go through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I limit to one per customer lifetime?

Yes — Fold tracks previous orders for logged-in customers and blocks repeat purchases of the capped product once the limit is reached.

What about guest checkouts?

Per-customer tracking requires a customer account or email match. For truly fair distribution on high-demand drops, requiring account login at checkout is the most reliable approach.

Can I set different limits for different customer groups?

Yes. Use customer tag conditions to apply different caps — retail customers get 1 unit, wholesale customers get 6.

Install Fold to add per-customer purchase limits to your Shopify store. Works on all plans, no code required.
