Shopify Payment Methods by Shipping Zone: How to Set Conditional Rules

Different markets use different payment methods. Cash on Delivery is expected in South Asia and the Middle East. SEPA bank transfer is standard in Germany. Buy Now Pay Later is dominant in Australia and the UK. Showing every payment method to every customer creates a cluttered checkout and hides the options your market actually wants.

Why Shipping-Zone-Based Payment Rules Matter

  • COD only makes sense for domestic deliveries — showing it for international orders creates confusion
  • BNPL providers have geographic restrictions — showing Klarna to customers outside its supported markets breaks checkout
  • Bank transfer details are country-specific — BACS in the UK, IBAN in Europe, routing number in the US
  • Payment method relevance directly affects checkout conversion

Setting Payment Rules by Country with Paymod

Paymod supports country-based conditions for payment visibility rules. The condition checks the shipping country selected at checkout. See the full country-based setup in Shopify payment rules by country.

Example: Hide COD for international orders

Rule: Hide Cash on Delivery when shipping country is NOT your domestic market. Domestic customers keep COD; international orders see card, PayPal, and wallet options only.

Example: Show bank transfer only for European customers

Rule: Hide Bank Transfer when shipping country is not in [DE, AT, CH, NL, FR, BE]. Customers in those countries see bank transfer; everyone else sees card and wallet options.

Example: Hide BNPL for countries where it is not supported

Rule: Hide Klarna / Afterpay when shipping country is outside the provider’s supported market. See how to hide BNPL on Shopify for the setup.

What About Shipping Zones vs Countries?

Paymod conditions evaluate against the shipping country (the destination address the customer enters at checkout). This maps to your Shopify shipping zones — if a country is in your ‘International’ zone, the condition evaluates the country code, not the zone name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I target specific regions within a country?

Country-level conditions are natively supported. State or postcode-level targeting depends on the Shopify Functions API’s available data fields at checkout time.

Does this work with all payment providers?

Paymod works with manual payment methods (COD, bank transfer, custom methods) and provider-displayed methods available via Shopify Payments. Some provider-specific buttons may require provider-side configuration.
