How to Disable Cash on Delivery for Specific Products on Shopify

Some products attract COD fraud. High-value electronics, luxury items, and bulky goods have disproportionately high return and refusal rates when ordered via Cash on Delivery. The obvious solution is to disable COD when those products are in the cart — but Shopify does not include this option natively.

Why Product-Based COD Rules Matter

A blanket COD ban reduces conversions in markets where COD is expected. A product-specific rule is smarter — it keeps COD available for low-risk products while removing it for the items most likely to result in a refused delivery.

Setting Product-Based COD Rules on Shopify

Install Paymod

Paymod supports payment method rules based on products in the cart. Install from the Shopify App Store.

Tag your high-risk products

In Shopify, add a tag to the products you want to restrict COD for — for example, ‘no-cod’ or ‘high-value’. You can tag products individually or in bulk from the product list.

Create a rule in Paymod

Open Paymod and create a new rule. Condition: Cart contains a product tagged ‘no-cod’. Action: Hide Cash on Delivery. Save and enable the rule.

Test from checkout

Add a no-cod-tagged product to your cart and proceed to checkout. Cash on Delivery should not appear in the payment options. Remove that product and check that COD reappears for a standard cart.

Combining with Other Conditions

You can combine the product condition with others. For example:

  • Hide COD when a high-value product is in the cart AND the order total is above £100
  • Hide COD for no-cod products, but only for first-time customers (no previous orders)
  • Always hide COD for international shipping addresses regardless of product

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I target specific variants rather than the whole product?

Yes. Paymod supports variant-level conditions, so you can hide COD for a premium variant of a product while keeping it available for the standard variant.

Does it work with Shopify’s native COD setting?

Paymod adds conditional logic on top of your existing payment provider setup. COD must still be enabled in your Shopify payments settings — Paymod then controls visibility based on your rules.

Install Paymod to disable Cash on Delivery for specific products on Shopify — no code, works on all plans.
