Your general product catalogue can accept all payment methods. But your age-restricted collection, your digital products collection, or your high-value luxury range might need different payment options at checkout. Shopify does not let you vary payment methods by collection natively.
Collection-Based Payment Rule Use Cases
- Age-restricted products — hide methods that cannot verify age (COD, BNPL)
- Digital downloads — hide COD and collect-on-delivery methods that make no sense for downloads
- High-value collections — hide higher-chargeback methods for luxury items
- Fragile or specialist goods — require prepayment to ensure dispatch intent
Using Product Tags as Collection Proxies
Paymod targets payment rules by product tag. Since Shopify collections can have corresponding tags (or you can tag all products in a collection manually), this is the practical way to target a collection.
Step 1 — Tag your collection products
Add a consistent tag to all products in the target collection — ‘age-restricted’, ‘digital’, ‘luxury’, or similar. If you use a smart collection, add the tag as a condition.
Step 2 — Create the Paymod rule
Rule: Hide [payment method] when cart contains a product tagged [your tag]. Paymod evaluates the cart at checkout and removes the payment method for any session that includes that product.
Step 3 — Test
Add a tagged product and proceed to checkout — the payment method should be hidden. Remove it — the method should return.
Multiple Collections, Multiple Rules
Create one rule per collection type. Digital products hide COD. Luxury products hide COD and BNPL. Age-restricted products hide PayPal (hiding PayPal for specific products). All rules evaluate simultaneously at checkout.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if a cart contains products from multiple collections with different rules?
All matching rules apply. If the cart has a digital product (hides COD) and a luxury item (hides COD and BNPL), both rules run and the union of restrictions applies.
Can I target a collection by its Shopify ID instead of product tags?
Paymod uses product tags and product conditions. Collection-by-ID targeting is not available natively — tags are the practical proxy.
Install Paymod to hide payment methods for specific Shopify collections — tag-based rules, no code, all plans.
