Selling in multiples is standard in many industries — wine sold by the case (12), eggs by the half-dozen (6), cosmetics in sets of 3. Shopify does not include a native way to require customers to buy in specific multiples. This guide explains how to set it up.
What Is a Bundle or Multiple Quantity Rule?
A multiple quantity rule requires the customer to purchase in increments — e.g. quantities of 3, 6, 12, or 24. If a customer adds 5 to their cart, the rule rejects it and prompts them to adjust to the nearest valid quantity (either 3 or 6).
When to Use Multiple Quantity Rules
- Wine, spirits, or beverages — sold by the bottle but minimum 6 or 12
- Cosmetics or skincare — sample sets that must be ordered in 3s
- Food and grocery — pack sizes that are not logistically separable
- Industrial or trade supplies — sold in boxes of 10 or 100
Setting Multiple Quantity Rules on Shopify with Fold
Fold supports multiple/increment rules alongside minimum and maximum quantity rules. Install from the Shopify App Store.
Create a Multiple Quantity rule
In Fold, click Create Rule and select Quantity Multiple. Set the required increment — for example, 6. Apply it to the target product or collection. Add a message: “This product is sold in multiples of 6. Please adjust your quantity.”
Combine with a minimum
You can pair a multiple rule with a minimum. Example: minimum 6 units, sold in multiples of 6. So valid quantities are 6, 12, 18, 24 — anything else is blocked at checkout.
Displaying Valid Quantities to Customers
To improve UX, show the valid quantity options on the product page. Some themes support quantity increment steppers natively. You can also add a note to the product description listing valid pack sizes. The Fold rule enforces it at checkout regardless of what quantity the customer enters.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the customer enters an invalid quantity?
Fold displays your custom error message and prevents checkout from proceeding until the customer updates to a valid quantity.
Can I set different multiples for different products?
Yes. Each rule targets its own product, variant, or collection with its own increment. You can have beer sold in 6s and spirits sold in 12s simultaneously.
Does it work with Shopify subscriptions?
Fold’s rules apply to standard Shopify checkout. Subscription apps have their own quantity logic — check your subscription app’s documentation for bundle rule support.
