Customer tags are one of Shopify’s most underused features. They let you label customers — ‘wholesale’, ‘vip’, ‘staff’, ‘b2b’ — and then use those labels to trigger different behaviour. When combined with order quantity rules, customer tags give you precise control over who can buy how much.
What You Can Do with Tag-Based Order Rules
- Wholesale customers must order a minimum of 12 units per product
- VIP customers can buy up to 10 units of sale items; standard customers are capped at 2
- Staff accounts are exempt from all purchase limits
- B2B customers see a different minimum order value than retail
How Customer Tags Work in Shopify
Tags are applied manually in the customer profile, via your Shopify admin, or automatically through apps and flows. Once tagged, a customer’s tag is available at checkout — apps using Shopify Functions can read it and apply conditional rules in real time.
Setting Tag-Based Rules with Fold
Fold supports customer tag conditions on every rule type — minimum quantity, maximum quantity, and per-customer limits.
Example: Wholesale minimum of 6 units
Rule: Minimum Quantity = 6. Condition: Customer tag = ‘wholesale’. Effect: wholesale customers must add at least 6 units of the targeted product before checkout proceeds. Retail customers see no restriction.
Example: VIP maximum of 10, standard maximum of 2
Rule 1: Maximum Quantity = 2. Condition: Customer tag is NOT ‘vip’. Rule 2: Maximum Quantity = 10. Condition: Customer tag = ‘vip’. Both rules are active simultaneously. Each customer gets the correct cap based on their tag.
Example: Staff exemption
Rule: Maximum Quantity = 3 (store-wide). Exception: Customer tag = ‘staff’ → no limit. Tag your staff accounts and they are automatically exempt from the purchase cap.
Applying Tags Automatically
Manual tagging works for small customer lists. For larger operations, consider:
- Shopify Flow — automatically tag customers after their first wholesale order
- A wholesale account request form that tags approved accounts
- Klaviyo or Omnisend segments synced back to Shopify customer tags
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a customer have multiple tags?
Yes. Shopify customers can have many tags. Rules evaluate against all tags present — so a customer tagged both ‘wholesale’ and ‘vip’ will match rules targeting either tag.
Are tag-based rules real-time?
Yes. Tags are read at checkout time. If you update a customer’s tag, the next checkout they complete will reflect the new rules.
