How to Stop Resellers Bulk Buying on Your Shopify Store

You launch a new product. Within minutes, resellers have bought out your entire stock. Your actual customers — the ones you built the store for — hit a sold-out page. This is a common problem for Shopify stores selling limited editions, collectibles, sneakers, streetwear, or any high-demand product.

The solution is a combination of per-customer purchase limits and maximum order quantities. Here is how to set them up.

Why Resellers Are Hard to Stop on Shopify

Shopify’s default behaviour allows any customer to add any quantity of any product to their cart and check out. There is no built-in mechanism to cap purchases per account, per email, or per session. Resellers exploit this by placing large orders immediately when stock goes live.

Two Rules That Block Reseller Behaviour

1. Maximum order quantity

Caps a single cart. Effective for stopping a single large order — e.g. maximum 2 units per cart of any limited item.

2. Per-customer purchase limit

Tracks purchase history. Even if a reseller places five separate orders of 2 units each, a per-customer lifetime limit blocks them after their first purchase hits the cap.

For serious reseller prevention, you need both. A maximum per cart stops large single orders. A per-customer limit stops repeated small orders.

Setting Up Anti-Reseller Rules with Fold

Fold supports both rule types. Install it from the Shopify App Store, then:

  • Create a Maximum Quantity rule: target your limited product, set maximum = 1 or 2 per cart
  • Create a Per-Customer Limit rule: same product, lifetime maximum = 2 units
  • Write a clear message: “Limited to 2 per customer. This limit is enforced across all orders.”

Additional Tactics

Require account login

In Shopify Settings → Checkout, set accounts to required. This makes per-customer tracking more reliable since guest checkouts can be harder to track across sessions.

Use customer tags to allow legitimate bulk buyers

If you have authorised retailers or distributors who legitimately need more stock, tag them as ‘approved-reseller’ and exempt that tag from the purchase limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can resellers get around the limit by making multiple accounts?

With per-email tracking and required login, multiple accounts from the same person are the main remaining loophole. Some merchants also pair purchase limits with manual order review for flagged high-quantity attempts.

Will the rules affect my regular wholesale customers?

Not if you use customer tag conditions. Tag wholesale accounts as ‘wholesale’ and exempt that tag from the retail-facing purchase limits.
